This collection of Huichol paintings and textiles is considered to be one of the finest collections in the world. It has taken more than 25 years to amass this collection. Many collectors have expressed their surprise about the quality and uniqueness of the artwork.
The collection is comprised of approximately 90 yarn paintings. These paintings have been collected one and two at a time over the 25 year period. The collector had the opportunity to have the pick each time the artwork arrived and consequently collected the absolute jewels. Jose Benitz Sanchez who recently passed away is considered the finest Shamanic artist of the Huichol Indians.There are many of his pieces including a masterpiece that had been destined for an 80 country exhibition, before it was obtained nearly twenty years ago.
The rest of the collection is an assortment of Huichol cultural artifacts including a Shaman’s chair, walking stick, horn whistles, a rare yarn inlaid sacred drum, beaded music instruments, the beaded skull of a bull that was sacrificed in a ceremony and presented to us as a gift. There are numerous shaman’s feathered hats, embroidered clothing, woven bags, belts, beaded rattles and more including a fine example of a sacred alter cloth. It truly is a complete representation of Huichol sacred life.
